Algonquin Winter Tracking 2011

Wednesday (Day 5)

Today I had quite an adventurous day, and hiked quite a distance.
I was lured onto Brewer Lake by a nice fresh set of Wolf tracks. I followed them across the lake to the start of a portage trail.

The wolves went off in another direction, but I decided to find out what the lake at the other end of the trail looked like.

Along the way, some moss on a tree with ice crystals.
And here is the lake at the end of the portage trail - St. Anthony Lake.

From here I decided to go cross-country to Bluff Lake (no trail).

Along the way to Bluff Lake I came across a magnificent grove of huge tall Hemlock trees.
From Bluff Lake I hiked along another portage trail back to the highway where I had parked. Even though it was still below zero, the bright sun actually felt downright HOT at times!

Along the way I found this nice patch of Wintergreen.

After lunch I hiked the Big Pines trail again, and once again marveled at the size of the ancient White Pine trees.
The end of the trail.
After that, I hiked up the Lookout trail. These Beech leaves were along the trail on the way up.
This Beech tree shows the marks of a bear's claws.
The far-reaching view from the top of Lookout trail.
And let's finish the day with a nice scene of Birch trees and rocks and snow.

Today I hiked about 9 km.
